How To Scroll On Galaxy Devices Without Using Your Finger

With the S Pen and Smart Screen features, you could say Samsung is making every effort to prevent you from operating your device with potentially grubby fingers.

Smart Scroll is a feature that lets you scroll up and down web pages or emails without touching the screen. There are two ways to use Smart Scroll, and I’ll show you how to turn on and use both. The default option (Section I) is head tilting, which uses the phone’s front camera to register your head’s movements. The other option is phone tilting (Section II), which uses your phone’s accelerometer to register your device’s movements. To be honest, the device tilting option is more reliable, and less awkward than the head tilting method. Either way, give both options a shot to see what’s comfortable for you.

Now, Samsung says Smart Scroll works on Internet and Email, but won’t work with most third-party apps, so don’t start head-banging or shaking your device too hard if an app isn’t scrolling.

I. Turn On Smart Scroll (With Default Head Tilting Mode)

1. Swipe down from the the top of the screen to pull down the notifications menu.

2. Tap the Setting icon on the top right (it looks like a gear).

3. Tap Controls towards the top right.

4. Scroll down to Smart Screen and tap it.

5. Slide the switch next to the Smart Scroll option to the right.

When you view a web page or email, you may see a blue/green eye symbol popup in the middle of the screen. This means that the device is orienting itself with your normal head position so that it can tell when you’re tilting your head up, down, or straight.

II. Switch to Device Tilt Mode

1. Follow steps 1-5 in Section I.

2. Tap the Smart Scroll option itself after turning it on.

3. Tap Tilting device instead of Tilting head.

You might see a green symbol appear/disappear quickly in the center of the screen. That is the device orienting itself with the way your holding you it, it only takes a few seconds. Once it’s done, you can tilt your phone down to scroll down, and tilt the phone up towards you to scroll up.

This becomes second-nature very quickly, and touching your screen to scroll will begin to seem primitive. Proceed to bask in your tech superiority.
