LG Optimus One to get Android 2.3 update in May?

Looks like the Nexus One won’t be the only One (pun definitely intended!) to get some Gingerbread sweetness.  In answer to a query posed by an Optimus One user on LG’s Facebook India page, the company came back saying that LG’s bestselling midranger will indeed get the Android 2.3 update before this May finishes up.  The Korean manufacturer had already confirmed the update for the handset in December 2010 and this latest news just gives us a time frame to expect it.  As an afterthought, LG did comment saying, “This information is subject to change and confirmation on the upgrade […]

Verizon finally fesses up to a March 17th release for the HTC Thunderbolt

This should finally put to rest all the rumored released dates for Verizon’s upcoming 4G LTE phone – HTC Thunderbolt.  The red giant has finally opened up and announced that HTC Thunderbolt will indeed be released on March 17th (this was after the rumored March 21st release), a date that was more or less predicted by the techpundits on the web, but it’s still good to hear it from the doc himself, isn’t it? The pricing seems reasonable at $249.99 as long as you adopt a two-year contract and so seem the data plans too, which will remain the same

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to launch in Spain on April 1st?

The news that the Play will finally see the light of day is great but a quick glance at the suggested price could definitely bring many our thumbgamers back down to earth.  According to a Spanish mobile news site, the Xperia Play will be launched on 1st April at a price of €649, which sure isn’t cheap, even if you are able to play PSOne games on the go.  The only solace we could possibly find from this tidbit is that is the unlocked price, and there might be a huge reduction in the cost if it’s tied down to

HTC Thunderbolt may be released on March 21

With all the rumors flying around, the HTC Thunderbolt should have been released already but then it hasn’t, and it’s now time to look for a new date.  This week, it comes BGR, who have heard from two different sources that the Verizon-branded Thunderbolt will be released very soon – on March 21 to be specific.  The validity of the tipsters is questionable, says BGR, but add this to the March 21st release date that made a short appearance on HTC’s Facebook homepage, and we could finally have a winning number on our hands.  Let’s just hope that this time

Verizon LG Revolution 4G LTE phone heads to the FCC

Popping up at the CES in January, the LG Revolution (model number VS910) will be the third LTE handset that is set to release on Verizon.  And now that it’s got the FCC treatment, this has sure turned into a race of which gets out first, with the other two LTE phones, the HTC Thunderbolt and the Samsung “Stealth” SCH-i510, also ready for a release. Coming to its features, the Revolution is far behind the Thunderbolt but hey, it’s all about choices right?  The phone obviously supports Verizon’s 4G 700MHz LTE network along with its CDMA/EVDO 850/1900MHz frequencies and hides

Samsung set to launch an 8.9-inch Tab on March 22?

If the invite teaser and the cryptic “78910” on it are to be believed, Sammy is prepping a 8.9-inch tablet to be unveiled at the CTIA on March 22.  What makes this an almost-sure thing is the fact that Samsung has two Android tablets on the loose already, a 7-incher and a 10-inch version (the 7 and 10 in “78910” we could assume), which should make this upcoming Tab the 8.9 inch version.  Judging from the pic, this one appears a tad thinner too (if seen in the context of the bulging 3.5-mm headphone socket) but that’s just about what

Samsung Galaxy Pro with QWERTY announced for next month

Taking a leaf out of BlackBerry’s book, Samsung has announced a new QWERTY smartphone that is reminiscent of RIM’s favorite design – candybar.  Called the Galaxy Pro, this Android phone was revealed recently by the company and although its specs may not blow your minds away, it still manages to put something on the table while being light on the wallet at the same time. This mid-range Android device features a small (by current standards) 2.8-inch touchscreen display, a passable 3MP camera, microSD expansion, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS and the whole package is powered by a slightly weak (again, by

No Froyo for Motorola Charm and Flipout – ever

It happened with the Milestone (which is yet to get to the promised “Flash ready” stage, officially) and now Motorola has done it again.  The company has now announced that the Flipout (model number MB511) and Charm (MB502) will be denied the sweet, succulent update to Froyo and are destined to remain with the same OS version, Android 2.1 Eclair. Compared to other companies who are more benevolent in bestowing updates (cases in point, HTC and Samsung), Motorola has been stingy with doling out exactly that, but this should come as no surprise to many looking at its past.  But

Official Gingerbread ROM leaked for Samsung Galaxy S I9000

Don’t start rejoicing already, as the leaked ROM seems to be only for the Asian and European versions of the original Galaxy S device.  The 250MB heavy file has been posted on the ever famous XDA forums by a user, who originally found it on a Polish Android forum where it surfaced. While we know we have a lot of adventurous flashers (?) in our reader base, we ask them to proceed with caution before getting the ROM on to their I9000 or better yet, wait until David verifies the authenticity of the ROM before proceeding to the usual wipe,

Verizon-branded HTC Trophy pictured

While the HTC Trophy will not be the first CDMA WP7 phone to be outed stateside (that would be the HTC Arrive on Sprint on March 20), it still gets to be a first at something – the first WP7 phone on Verizon.  The Big Red hasn’t come out with the news yet but the rumor mill has been pointing to a release in late March this year, and this photo, sent to Engadget by an anonymous tipster, pretty much confirms the news. The GSM variant of this Windows Phone 7 phone was already launched in Europe last year, and

HTC to release Gingerbread update for the Incredible S and the Desire series by end of June

Looks like HTC isn’t stingy with sharing the good stuff after all, unlike some other companies (I am talking to you, Motorola).  The Taiwanese manufacturer has revealed to Slashgear that it will be bestowing Gingerbread not only on it’s latest offering, the Incredible S (unveiled at the MWC), but also some older devices in the Desire series – namely the Desire, Desire HD and the Desire Z.  The Android 2.3 update should be flying out before this June is up and with only four months left till then, this could be considered a lot quicker than the time when Froyo

It was supposed to drop on February 24th initially and then the 28th, but it looks likes the gods in HTC realm decided to strike with the Thunderbolt a little later again, on March 10, 2011.   According to AndroidCommunity (and its semianonymous tipster), the smartphone will be available from Best Buy on that day and after many postponements, we sure hope this time it’s for real.
