HTC Desire HD and Incredible S getting Gingerbread on May 16

In three short days, the Incredible S and the HTC Desire HD will be getting what has been long expected – some delicious Gingerbread of the 2.3.3 variety.  Although there was talk about the update being released last week, it wasn’t really and this time, HTC itself has come out and announced that the update will start rolling out on May 16th for unlocked phones – as for the carrier-locked devices, this is what HTC UK had to say on its Facebook page recently: Hey guys, firstly we want to thank you all for being so patient about the Gingerbread

Galaxy Tab 10.1 gets rooted the easy way

At the recent Google I/O event, 5000 lucky winners got to walk away with a shiny new, yet-to-be-released Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets, limited versions at that.  It seems that the device has gained root access already, a feat performed by Birdman and his cohorts over at AllDroid. The procedure also seems pretty straightforward – push the zip file (download here) via ADB to the SD card, boot to recovery via ADB again, run the zip file, and enjoy complete unrestricted access to the device It’s almost as if Google wanted this device rooted within a few hours of giving

Samsung Galaxy S II to go for free on Orange UK

The dual-cored device is available with several UK retailers (unlocked and otherwise) but if you looking to snag it for free, you might want to hold off a bit longer.  The Galaxy S II has recently been added to the “Coming Soon” section of the Orange UK website and apart from showcasing its stellar features, has declared the device will be completely free on select plans.  We would place our bets on a £35 a month, two-year contract, as that’s what seems to be the most popular on the various retailers’ sites. With 3 million units already preordered, Samsung could

T-Mobile G2/HTC Desire Z on track for a Gingerbread update

Although the exact date of the rollout is not specified, with the HTC Incredible S and Desire HD already getting their share of the Android 2.3 update, the Desire Z (going by T-Mobile G2 here in the USA) should get what it deserves pretty soon. TMonews just uncovered a flyer denoting the update and its key improvements (swapping 3G/4G for the H icon to show network speed being the major change) and there’s still the cryptic “coming soon” message that we so often see with news on Android updates for various devices. We’ll keep you in the loop and when

Fully Functional Sense 3.0 ROMs for HTC Desire HD and Desire Z now available

We first saw how cool Sense 3.0 looked when the Sensation (codename: Pyramid) ROM was leaked but this one seems to be based on a leaked release for the HTC Kingdom (more widely known as the HTC Evo 3D).   The ROM has been ported for the Desire HD and the Desire Z, but have been designed to play fair with their US variants, the Inspire 4G and G2, too.  The installation process is described as “delicate,” so you might want to peruse the concerned Desire Z and Inspire 4G XDA threads a bit more carefully. You can also look forward

Samsung Exhibit 4G for T-Mobile whizzes through the FCC

Numbered as SGH-T759, the Samsung Exhibit 4G pulled in for a quick visit recently to the FCC and left, but not before we could glean a few specs – and a few live pics courtesy TmoNews.  The display looks like it could be 3.7-inch sAMOLED and there are dual cameras (rear with flash), HSPA+ network support, and TouchWizzed Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread (2.3.4 after release may be?).  The Exhibit 4G is also rumored to house a 1.4GHz ARM11 processor and a 5MP rear lens, but these are yet to confirmed. As to the price and availability, now that the T759 has

Demo: BlackBerry PlayBook plays nice with Android apps

Was the PlayBook a hit or something that RIM wants to forget and move on to greener pastures? Many would say that the device could have been better and a lot of nags (no native IM or email app, on a BlackBerry device, isn’t that crazy?) could have been avoided to complement the QNX operating system and the hefty hardware built in.  Of course, RIM has promised weekly updates which could fix the issues plaguing the tablet, and one redeeming factor for the PlayBook could be the ability to “play back” Android apps, alongside apps downloaded from BlackBerry’s App World.

CyanogenMod popularity fortified – CM7 now runs on 200,000 devices

If you have an Android device and if you have rooted, flashed or abused it in any other sort of warranty-voiding capers, I am sure you would have heard about CyanogenMod and their awesome mods.  A quick look at our ROMs section will reveal how popular their mods are and the alacrity with which updates are pushed out, shaming any decent phone manufacturer mulling over update releases.  The dev group’s latest build, CM7, based on Android 2.3.3 has recently crossed the 200,000 marker in downloads, currently at just a bit above 219,000  – the figure will necessarily shoot up if

Sony Ericsson announces the Xperia Mini and Mini Pro

Sony Ericsson has recently announced its newest additions to the Xperia line – the Mini and Mini Pro.  Small and compact seem to be the keywords here, which is evident both in the “mini” moniker attached their names and the actual size of the devices, and should appeal to many who want something light in their pocket, yet have the same prowess as the current crop of Android smartphones.  While the Xperia Mini is billed as “the world’s smallest Android smartphone with HD video recording,” the Xperia Mini Pro stays true to its previous iteration and totes a full QWERTY

Gingerbread on its way for the HTC Incredible S and Desire HD

The day is here and after a lot of teasing, the Gingerbread update is riding the air waves right now to the HTC Incredible S and Desire HD handsets around the world (sans US where they are known as the Droid Incredible 2 and the Inspire 4G).  The build numbers after the update will be 2.36.405.8 and 2.12.405.7 for the Incredible S and the Desire HD respectively – so the update will only get you to Android 2.3.3, hence no video chat on GTalk. There’s still no info on the update for the Droid Incredible and the Inspire 4G this

HTC myTouch 4G gets an unofficial Gingerbread treat

The spate of leaked ROMs continues and now the official Gingerbread ROM for the 6-month-old T-Mobile myTouch 4G has surfaced.  The ROM is based on 2.3.3 and features something that has long been incorporated in other Cyanogenmod builds – quick access to toggle various connectivity options.  Other than that, there seems to be no major change and you will still have to live with Sense 2.1 instead of 3.0 which was the case with the Sensation. Head over to the XDA thread if we have got your Android senses tingling and if you own a myTouch 4G.  Also, take a

Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.0 and 5.0 get their official badges

Both the Galaxy S 4.0 and 5.0 are billed as media players, with the only difference between them being the display size with 4.0 obviously measuring in at 4 inches and the 5.0 going a bit bigger at 5 inches.  Other than that, the devices are similar to Samsung’s yesteryear star, the Galaxy S, but without cellular connectivity.  The only lifeline to the interwebs on these two devices is WiFi and feature access to the Android Market.  Both the devices are now official and should be making their way soon to Russia (SGS WiFi 4.0) and Switzerland (SGS WiFi 5.0)

The T-Mobile and the international versions of the Android smartphone need not wait at T-Mobile/LG’s mercy any longer as the Cyanogenmod7 ROM has been ported on to both the variants of the LG Optimus 2x.  The development is still in the “nightly” so you have the options either waiting for a stable release or jump right in get it already.  That is if you are okay with the current bugs in video capture, brightness, and audio, which should be sorted out as more release candidates are out.  The procedure seems straightforward and involves the ROM Manager app (free version works

Motorola Atrix/Atrix 4G getting updated to Gingerbread soon

While the device is capable of blowing away its competitors in terms of sheer hardware power, the Atrix is flawed in one single aspect – no Gingerbread out of the box.  But the company seems to be doing the needful, according to Andrew Morley, VP of International Marketing, who thus spake just before the Atrix launch in the UK on Orange. Yes, there are. We haven’t announced timings but we have announced plans for intentions Also, Mr Morley revealed that the update will be pushed out in the US and Europe simultaneously, which would definitely be a first for Motorola.
