At the recent Google I/O event, 5000 lucky winners got to walk away with a shiny new, yet-to-be-released Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets, limited versions at that.  It seems that the device has gained root access already, a feat performed by Birdman and his cohorts over at AllDroid. Although the exact date of the rollout is not specified, with the HTC Incredible S and Desire HD already getting their share of the Android 2.3 update, the Desire Z (going by T-Mobile G2 here in the USA) should get what it deserves pretty soon. TMonews just uncovered a flyer denoting the update and its key improvements (swapping 3G/4G for the H icon to show network speed being the major change) and there’s still the cryptic “coming soon” message that we so often see with news on Android updates for various devices. We first saw how cool Sense 3.0 looked when the Sensation (codename: Pyramid) ROM was leaked but this one seems to be based on a leaked release for the HTC Kingdom (more widely known as the HTC Evo 3D).   The ROM has been ported for the Desire HD and the Desire Z, but have been designed to play fair with their US variants, the Inspire 4G and G2, too.  The installation process is described as “delicate,” so you might want to peruse the concerned Desire Z and Inspire 4G XDA threads a bit more carefully. Sony Ericsson has recently announced its newest additions to the Xperia line – the Mini and Mini Pro.  Small and compact seem to be the keywords here, which is evident both in the “mini” moniker attached their names and the actual size of the devices, and should appeal to many who want something light in their pocket, yet have the same prowess as the current crop of Android smartphones.  While the Xperia Mini is billed as “the world’s smallest Android smartphone with HD video recording,” the Xperia Mini Pro stays true to its previous iteration and totes a full QWERTY

The day is here and after a lot of teasing, the Gingerbread update is riding the air waves right now to the HTC Incredible S and Desire HD handsets around the world (sans US where they are known as the Droid Incredible 2 and the Inspire 4G).  The build numbers after the update will be 2.36.405.8 and 2.12.405.7 for the Incredible S and the Desire HD respectively – so the update will only get you to Android 2.3.3, hence no video chat on GTalk. Both the Galaxy S 4.0 and 5.0 are billed as media players, with the only difference between them being the display size with 4.0 obviously measuring in at 4 inches and the 5.0 going a bit bigger at 5 inches.  Other than that, the devices are similar to Samsung’s yesteryear star, the Galaxy S, but without cellular connectivity.  The only lifeline to the interwebs on these two devices is WiFi and feature access to the Android Market.  Both the devices are now official and should be making their way soon to Russia (SGS WiFi 4.0) and Switzerland (SGS WiFi 5.0)

The T-Mobile and the international versions of the Android smartphone need not wait at T-Mobile/LG’s mercy any longer as the Cyanogenmod7 ROM has been ported on to both the variants of the LG Optimus 2x.  The development is still in the “nightly” so you have the options either waiting for a stable release or jump right in get it already.  That is if you are okay with the current bugs in video capture, brightness, and audio, which should be sorted out as more release candidates are out.  The procedure seems straightforward and involves the ROM Manager app (free version works
