Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 to be available via Best Buy starting June 8th

It’s not the cool, geeky edition that was doled out recently at the Google I/O, but still geeky enough to be a decent tablet from Samsung.  The company has now announced that the 10.1-inch version of its popular Galaxy Tab will be available exclusively through Best Buy store on Union Square in NYC beginning June 8th, before being hawked nationwide from other Best Buy stores from June 17th.  As for the prices, the version with 16GB memory onboard will check in at $499 and 32GB edition will be selling at $599 – both are the WiFi-only variants of the device. Gingerbread update for the HTC Evo 4G on June 6th

Late last month, Sprint had mistakenly put the HTC Evo 4G on sale with Android 2.3 on its online store, but as it turned out, Froyo was still the OS onboard.  The carrier is now looking to rectifying this error by updating the Evo 4G for real, if an Engadget tipster (and his convincing snaps of the Sprint event calendar) are to be believed.  The update is set for a rollout starting June 6th, next Monday, but antsy users could get it as early as this Friday, by checking for the update manually. Aside from the usual improvements that the

Android 3.1 upgrade now ready for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer in Europe

After announcement last month of the same, Asus has now stayed true to its word, rolling out the Android 3.1 update for the Eee Pad Transformer in Europe as we speak.  The device will be the first tablet from Asus to get the update announced last month during the Google I/O event.  If you didn’t know already, the Eee Pad Transformer is Asus’ take on the Android tablet, with one major difference – it can be “transformed” using an optional keyboard into a notebook. Although not exactly a overhaul, the update does bring a few improvements, like the USB Host

Acer W4 with Windows Phone Mango spotted

Microsoft’s mobile OS savior, the Windows Phone Mango, was spotted running on an Acer phone at Computex Trade Show in Taipei recently.  Specwise, the Acer W4 is identical to the current crop of Android/WP7 devices with a 1GHz processor, 3.6-inch 800×460 WVGA display, 5MP autofocus camera, and 8GB of internal memory. There’s also WiFi, Bluetooth and the like for connectivity but what we need to focus on right now is the WP Mango OS, which we haven’t gotten to see on actual devices – not counting the demo at the time of unveiling. The picture you see above is a

LG Genesis to join US Cellular’s lineup on June 9

Like the HTC Merge that is joining the US Cellular ranks today, the LG Genesis is also a QWERTY-toting smartphone, but with a twist.  The device features two touchscreen displays – a 3.5-incher on the outside with the internal display measuring 3.2 inches, both capable of 480×800 pixel resolution.  What further sets it above the Merge is its 1GHz processor, while its HTC counterpart makes do with an 800MHz processor.  Other features include a 5-megapixel camera, 430MB of internal memory with MicroSD expansion (8GB bundled) and a 1500mAH battery.  The device runs a modified version of Android 2.2 currently and

US Cellular adds HTC Merge to its offerings

After a subdued release this month via third-party retailers for Verizon, the Merge has now made its way on to US Cellular.  The device is a mid-range Android phone that comes a 5MP camera, a 3.8-inch touchscreen display, an 800MHz processor with 512MB of RAM, 3G network support, aGPS, WiFi and the other usual components.  The specs do sound average by current standards, but the Merge also has a full physical QWERTY keypad, which could be a plus for many customers.  The device is currently on Sensed Android 2.2 but Gingerbread was promised for it by HTC in February, so

Dell Streak gets an unofficial taste of Gingerbread

Currently at Android 2.2, the 1GHz-powered Dell Streak has come a long way from the Donut 1.6 OS that it came with originally.  Stephen Hyde over at MoDaCo has now given it a new breath of life, porting Gingerbread over to the aging device, calling it the StreakDroid 2.0.0 or GingerStreak.   The build is based on Android 2.3.3 and the installation procedure seems pretty straightforward if you know what you are doing: Download Streakdroid5-2.0.zip from the links below Boot into StreakMod or Clockwork Recovery Select Update from Zip File > Select Zip File From SD Card > StreakDroid5-2.0.zip Wait for

Samsung Galaxy 5 gets a CM7 port

In demonstration of yet another trait that the dev community has in contrast to the big cellphone manufacturers, Cyanogenmod 7 has now been modded to play nice with the Galaxy 5, a middling Android phone that Samsung quickly forgot after its upgrade to Android 2.2.  The Gingerbread-based custom ROM is now available for the year-old device thanks to XDA member, subpsyke, with most of the components working except for a few niggles.   The ROM is still not ready for primetime though and if you have any experience in cooking up ROMs, the developer would welcome it.
