One among the three phones that Sony Ericsson announced recently, the Xperia Ray Gingerbread phone is definitely the best of the lot with its BRAVIA Mobile-based 3.3-inch display and its 8MP camera.  The device, along with the others, were announced to be released in the third quarter of 2011 and we even heard that Three UK has already picked up the Xperia Ray to make it available on its network. The device is now up for preorder on Play.com, an online UK retailer who promises to the ship the handset by August 15th, which lands bang in the middle of […]

Motorola Droid 2 Global to be updated to Gingerbread after launch of Droid 3

We have been hearing different dates thrown about for the Droid 2 Gingerbread update since a couple of months but the actual process is yet to be begin.  The fate of other devices in the same Droid class is no better, and most of the devices are still leading their Froyo-laden lives with an eye towards a day when this will change. After the hasty takedown of a scheduled 2.3 release, rumors now point to update for the Droid 2 Global right after the Droid 3 is launched, which we could peg down to somewhere between July 7th and the

Leak: HTC Eternity with Mango 7.1 OS

Compared to the deluge of Android leaks and rumors we report on, Windows Phone handsets get far less spotlight – a proper reason might be the lack of a proper WP7 handset we are yet to see, but judge us not, we treat all our tech equally.  After the Nokia Sea Ray, we now have a chance to bring you what could be a phone that is bound to cause waves, if not a few ripples, given its rumored specs. Codenamed the Eternity, HTC Inside has unearthed a picture and a pretty impressive spec sheet to speak for it, which

Skype gets updated to 2.0, now cracked to work with many more devices

Yesterday, Skype updated its Android client version to 2.0 and announced video calling support to limited devices – HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo and Pro, and the Nexus S.  The client now enables cross-platform video-calling on 3G/4G and WiFi networks, just like the native Google Talk app that now voice/video after the Android 2.3.4 update.  Just as other Android users were despairing over the situation, an enterprising dev called Pulser over at VillainROM has now managed to tweak the apk file (which was originally meant for the Samsung Galaxy S II) to run on many more devices

Samsung Galaxy Z for Three Sweden unveiled

Oddly enough, the announcement for the new Galaxy Z comes from Three Sweden, with not a peep from Samsung itself.  Anyways, the device has been revealed by the carrier today in its lineup and will go for 3995 Swedish kronor (€435 or $630).  The handset seems like a cross between the lower-specced Galaxy SL and the high-end Galaxy S II.  Here’s a quick look at what it’s made of: 4.2-inch SC-LCD touchscreen WVGA 800×480 display Tegra2 chipset with dual-core 1GHz Cortex-A9 CPU 8GB of onboard memory Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi, and aGPS 5MP camera with LED flash and 720p video recording

Official: Samsung Conquer 4G for Sprint

Sprint has announced its newest entrant to its mid-range Android segment – the Samsung Conquer 4G.  We say mid range not because this smartphone is majorly handicapped but because the definition of high end has changed in the recent months to phones with dual-cored CPUs and at least a gig of RAM snuck in, while the Conquer 4G comes equipped with a 1GHz processor.  One other weak point that adds to this is its 3.2 megapixel camera on the back, although oddly Samsung seems to have compensated that part with a 1.3mpx lens on the front for video chat. Other

Facebook iPhone app gets a facelift

While the release notes did profess fixing “various bugs” and bringing “improved security,” they did not include info on the changes that were blatantly obvious – improvements to the UI on profile pages.  Users will now find two new buttons on the top similar to the Facebook desktop version, Share Photo and Write Post, which should make for some quick status updates and on the fly image sharing.  One more hidden feature that is new is the ability now to save pictures from the app, which can be done by tapping the arrow while the photo is open and selecting

Windows Phone 7 Tango and Apollo updates in the works

The Mango update is yet to be released, but the latest reports point to two more updates on the horizon following Mango, codenamed “Tango” and “Apollo.”  A manufacturing company called Compal Communications, which makes cellphones for Nokia, has revealed a deal with the Redmond giant to build devices not only for Mango devices but also the devices with an update that is scheduled to follow it, called the Tango.  The Tango update will then supposedly make way for Apollo, something which has been discussed previously in WP7 circles. Feature-wise, we should know more about these two updates once Mango is

Amazon cuts price of HTC Evo 3D to $150

From an initial price of $180, Amazon has now dropped the price on the Sprint Evo 3D by a further $30 to $150.  This does sound like a pretty good deal for the kind of tech you are getting, but remember you can only avail this offer if you sign up for a new two-year contract or add a new line to an existing account – users wanting to upgrade will still have to shell out yesterday’s price of $180, still a nice bargain if you consider the Evo 3D’s awesome 4.3-inch qHD 3D display and its 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon

The Evo 3D seems to have already found a home in England with Vodafone UK now announcing its availability starting next month – the carrier has even readied a video to prove its claim.  The 3D-screened Android smartphone will definitely find a few more adopters in the UK and we should hear about them pretty soon. Motorola Triumph for Virgin Mobile on preorder from Best Buy for $299.99

It may not take the cake pitted against the faster dual-core smartphones available now, but its 1GHz Scorpion processor should be no sloucher either.  The device also features an Adreno 205 GPU and 512MB to run sweet, succulent stock Android with no manufacturer/operator meddling whatsoever.  That’s right, the Moto Triumph will not feature MotoBLUR, which seems like a very good decision on the company’s part. Other features include a 5MP camera, 2GB of onboard storage, (mini?) HDMI port, and the usual array of connectivity options.  There’s no fancy 4G support here but the device will be able to cruise 3G
