No Gingerbread love for the LG Optimus 3D until October

Yes, this is indeed bad news, but there’s a silver lining.  Apparently, the Android 2.3 update for the Froyo-munching Optimus 3D is being held back until October for one significant reason more than any – giving users the ability to upscale 2D to 3D on apps which utilize OpenGL for graphics.  That does seem like a solid reason and we are sure most of LG’s 3D handset users will agree with us on this sentiment – after all, what’s the fun in owning a 3D device if you can’t watch 3D content that you didn’t shoot, right? We’ll keep our […]

T-Mobile taking preorders for the HTC myTouch 4G Slide

Things seem to be moving on smoothly for the myTouch 4G Slide – the QWERTY smartphone was announced late last month with a definitive release date of July 27th by T-Mobile, and in line with this, the carrier is now taking preorders for the device so it can be delivered at the promised hour.  Customers looking to get their foot in before anyone else will now have the opportunity to reserve their device – in turn eliminating the tedious task of personally heading to the nearest T-Mobile outlet to get the device. Priced at $199, the myTouch 4G Slide has

Samsung Galaxy Z (R) heading to the UK later this month

Launched as the Galaxy Z in Sweden recently, the same device is now headed for a release later this month in the UK, but under the alias of Galaxy R.  Frankly, we thought devices took on different names only when making the hop over to this side of the Atlantic, but we are okay with it as long as it doesn’t get renamed every time it crosses a border. As we already told you, the Galaxy R is a lower-specced Gingerbread 2.3.4 replica of the popular Galaxy S II with features consisting of a Tegra2 dual-core 1GHz CPU, 4.2-inch S-LCD

Video: Nokia Sea Ray pops up again, gives us a fleeting glimpse of Mango 7.1

If it was Mr Elop himself who unwittingly lead to the Sea Ray’s first appearance, it’s a worker in some Nokia manufacturing unit who thought it might be a good idea to get us a video of the device this time.  As you can see from the video, the Nokia W9, as it is called now, has the standard set of buttons – volume toggle and the dedicated camera button – the power button has moved to the side right below the volume toggle, similar to the design found on some Samsung Bada phones.  The back, menu and search buttons

T-Mobile UK Galaxy S gets Android 2.3 update

At long last, T-Mobile UK has announced the Android 2.3 update for the original Samsung Galaxy S, via its support forums.  The unlocked breed of the same popular device has been snacking on Gingerbread for a while now, but no such luck has been bestowed upon the T-Mobile UK version, until now at least.  And to add insult to injury, the current version slowly making its way across the UK is supposedly version 2.3.3, which means another long waiting period before TMo UK users can actually get chatty face to face on their Galaxy S smartphones via GTalk – Android

Sprint-branded Within (Galaxy S II) spotted

This blurry shot is the only evidence we have as of now that the Samsung Galaxy S II might eventually make it to American shores and also, the news that Sprint might have dibs on the device before anybody else.  The picture above, unearthed by ThisIsMyNext, shows the back of the handset prominently displaying the Sprint logo and the 8MP lens that the Galaxy II has, dropping the original rectangular shape for an oval frame surrounding it.  The back texture is also similar to the original device and according to the tipster who sent the pictures, the device, to be

AT&T drops the price on iPhone 3GS to $9

With the iPhone 4 already available and the iPhone 5 on the brink of a release, it’s hard to gain a further customer base for a yesteryear phone like the iPhone 3GS.  Seems like AT&T was mulling over the same point too and has decided to drop price smack down to $9.  The price is only applicable on refurbished phones, but a device with iOS for $9 still sounds like a steal to my ears. Of course, you will still have to lock yourself down with AT&T for a further two years, which seems like asking too much, but for

Gingerbread update out now for the Samsung Galaxy Ace

It’s been almost four months since the official build of the Gingerbread update for the Froyo-running Galaxy Ace was leaked (and already being used by big chunk of flash-savvy populace), but Samsung didn’t utter a word on when the actual rollout will begin.  It hasn’t done so even now, but has instead opted to deliver the goods through its official channel (read: Kies), according to SamFirmware. Currently, the graduated rollout will begin in Russia and Poland before making its way on to phones across the world.  The Android version is still 2.3.3 though, not 2.3.4, but it’s all the same

Motorola Atrix bootloader finally unlocked

Following the recent breakthrough with the AT&T Atrix 4G, where the bootloader was unlocked after snooping around the code in an official Gingerbread release, developers over at XDA have been hard at work to unshackle the international version of the Motorola Atrix. The efforts seem to have finally paid off and as a result, the doors have been kicked wide open enabling other devs to go ahead and cook some awesome ROMs for this powerhouse of a device.  The feat was accomplished by a group of XDA developers and beta testers under Project Cheesecake, using an Orange UK Android 2.3

Droid 3 heads to Bell Canada, to be called the Motorola XT860 4G

A Droid version released outside the US is usually called the Milestone, but Motorola seems to have decided to drop the moniker in favor of a plain old model number with the Droid 3.  Called the XT860 4G, the device will soon be knocking on our neighbor’s door and will be available on Bell Mobility this summer.  Here’s a quick look at the feature set: Dual-core 1GHz processor Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread 4.0-inch qHD display Combined five-row QWERTY and touchscreen keypad 8MP rear-facing camera with dual LED flash, 1080p video-capable Front-facing VGA camera for video chat Up to 32GB of

Sprint lowers price of Nexus S 4G, now only $100

With its 1GHz processor and Super AMOLED 4-inch display, the Nexus S 4G is marginally better than its wildly popular predecessor, the Nexus One, and comes off underpowered amongst the likes of the Sensation and the Galaxy S2 that are ruling the roost currently.  Still, the Android 2.3 device isn’t all bad and one of the perks of owning a Nexus series smartphone is the preferential treatment it gets when updates are released, and the chance to experience Android in its simplest, elegant form without any UI bloatware slowing up the process. If that wasn’t enough to get the device,

Android Market gets revamped, now offers Movies and Books

Google has now updated the Android Market with a brand new look – gone is the wavy design that we were so used to all these days.  Taking a leaf out of WP7’s UI, the Market now goes for a tiled look to give access to more content at once than the previously vertically scrolling interface was able to.  Users can now side-swipe to move between categories, with new categories now consisting of apps endorsed by the Google editors and staff. The Market also offers access to books and movies within the app, which is a significant change from before

Android 3.2 update ready for Motorola Xoom, more tablets to follow soon

It’s no Ice Cream Sandwich – you can taste that towards the end of this year – but it is an important update nonetheless.  While the Ice Cream Sandwich aims at unifying all Android devices under the sun to a common OS version, eradicating the word ‘fragmentation’ that has been shoved in Google’s face time and again, this Honeycomb 3.2 update can be seen as a harbinger of sorts, aiming to unify all tablets, be it your 7-inchers or the bigger 10-inch devices.   The update has now started rolling out for the Motorola Xoom, with more tablets to follow

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play announced on AT&T, to be available in two colors

We expected much more fanfare than this subdued unleashing of the gaming-centric smartphone on AT&T.  The carrier has silently announced that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will be available on its network soon, although it failed to reveal any substantial details on when exactly that’ll happen or for how much.  The event in New York where it was announced did reveal a few tidbits though – in addition to the black version we have already eyed previously, the Play will also be available in a color called “Stealth Blue” which sounds less appealing than the original black. The specs are

Gingerbread update for the HTC Desire Z imminent

HTC has been slowly updating most of its Android devices to Gingerbread 2.3 and after the Droid Incredible 2 which is getting its due currently, the next device on the list seems to be the QWERTY-toting Desire Z.  The smartphone (known as the G2 on T-Mobile) is currently in the final stages of testing, according to HTC’s Facebook announcements recently, and will start rolling out within the next couple of weeks over the air.  This seems more concrete than the vague assurance Desire Z users got last month (and which HTC didn’t keep).  The company also says that there might
