Gmail app for iOS quietly disappears from the App Store

Those who had downloaded the native Gmail iOS app in the hopes of finally experiencing Gmail like it is on Android must have been sorely disappointed to find a buggy, web-based version of the app being released yesterday.  That’s a very good reason for pulling an app out and Google has done just that, but with the intention of fixing a push notification bug, leaving iOS users to continue waiting for something better this time. Users who have tried the app are reporting what is basically an app that is reduced to a bookmark, with features that can be accessed

T-Mobile now offering the HTC Flyer for $299

While AT&T got the tablet almost two months ago, the Scribe-enabled Flyer has taken its sweet time to reach the Tmo masses.  The device is now available from T-Mobile to all customers, as opposed to sales limited to business customers only in the last few weeks. You can get the 7-inch tablet for $300 with a new T-Mobile contract but those looking to buy it without one will have to cough up a hefty $545.  You be the judge of such a high price for a tablet that comes with a 1.5GHz single-core processor, 16GB of internal memory, 5MP camera,

Acer Allegro running Windows Phone 7.5 announced

Acer, not preferring the bang that the Nokia announcement had yesterday, has quietly revealed the first member in its Windows Phone section, the Allegro.  The device will be running the Windows Phone 7.5 OS and comes with moderate specs to keep things affordable – it’ll feature a single-core 1GHz processor and a 3.6-inch WVGA LCD display coupled with the usual connectivity options of Bluetooth, WiFi and aGPS.  The Allegro will also be having 8GB of onboard storage and a 5MP lens with LED flash for on-the-go snapshots. The handset will sell for €299, roughly 400 of your local greens, and

Nokia Lumia 710 now on Nokia USA website

Not a word was said at the Nokia World 2011 yesterday about a US release for Nokia’s first two Windows Phone devices, but this news should keep the hopes up for those who still rely on Nokia for their mobile needs.  Lumia 710, the cheaper of the two WP 7.5 devices revealed at the event, has now appeared on the Nokia US website with a “Coming Soon” tag, pointing to a release in the near future stateside. The slightly higher-specced Lumia 800 seems to be MIA and may take its time crossing the Pacific, or may not come at all,

HTC Thunderbolt gets a pre-alpha build of Android 4.0

The source code for the Ice-Cream Sandwich update is yet to be released, but that hasn’t stopped some devs to get on and create a port anyway based on the SDK, which was made available immediately after the Galaxy Nexus unveiling recently.  One such dev, jdkoreclipse, on Rootzwiki has succeeded to some extent in doing this for the HTC Thunderbolt – and when we say some “extent”, it means that this pre-alpha version currently boots up and that’s about that.  The touchscreen is yet to start working and so are the other prominent components that are usually used on a

Nexus One may not get Ice-Cream Sandwich 4.0 – Google

The Galaxy Nexus will come with Ice-Cream Sandwich and things are afoot to get the 4.0 update ASAP to the Nexus S, but what about the original Nexus One?  The answer to this question is not good news, as this aging device isn’t on the list to get Google’s latest software.  The company feels that the handset’s CPU and GPU aren’t built to handle Android 4.0 the way it’s supposed to be handled – we were expecting something of this sort, but it’s still disheartening to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. Having said that, Nexus One has seen

Nokia Lumia 710 – 800’s little brother with the same WinPho 7.5 Mango OS

The second Windows Phone smartphone announced by Nokia is the Lumia 710 – a phone similar in features to the Lumia 800 in most aspects.  This handset features the same 1.4GHz processor and what looks to be a 5MP camera slapped on the back, and the same touchscreen display measuring at 3.7 inches with ClearBlack technology.  The only major difference we see here is the inclusion of physical keys for accessing the Windows Phone 7.5 OS features instead of the touch-sensitive ones on the 800, thus keeping the costs lower than the flagship Lumia 800.  The device seems to be

Nokia unveils the Lumia 800 with Windows Phone 7.5 OS

If watched our N9 review recently, looking at the pic above will remind you a lot about that ill-fated device since it is essentially the design except for the touch-capable Windows buttons below its 3.7-inch AMOLED display.  After several leaks, the Lumia 800 was officially unveiled a couple of minutes ago by Nokia at their Nokia World 2011 held in London and while its specs won’t be blowing any minds away soon, it still is a decent device – after all, it’s still a Nokia, right?  The device is one of six handsets introduced at the event, alongside the Asha

HTC Thunderbolt to get Android 2.3.4 – this time for real

When we last told you about this update, we are pretty sure many of you must have been left scratching your head wondering where heck it was and if the update had ever left the HTC/Verizon servers.  It did actually, only to be pulled back after some serious flaws were discovered in the update.  Fast forward to almost a month later, the carrier/manufacturer seems to have gotten those glaring holes closed up, as they are now in the process of getting the update out in a few more days. But it’s been a long wait, we know, so for those

Samsung Stratosphere gets rooted – let the cooking begin?

The Stratosphere, released on October 13th, may not be your ideal device without a blazing dual-core CPU or PC-spec RAM, but it gets the job done if you know your way with a QWERTY device.  But that doesn’t mean it should get the same kind of developer love that most big-named droid devices should get, which is what knightcrusader over at Rootzwiki also thought we presume.  The man has rooted the Stratosphere successfully and, goes without saying, opened up the doors for custom ROMs to be built for the LTE device. The procedure seems fairly lengthy, but you can get

Symbian Anna gets a minor update

This may not be relevant even to most Symbian Anna users, since it won’t really affect the way they are using their Nokia devices on this update, but they should still know that the update is going to fix some bugs and clear out issues on the backend.  The update numbered 025.007 will not be mandatory, according to Nokia, and will be rolled out in waves. For those who want to download it anyways on their N8, C6-01, C7 and E series devices anyways, they could wait for it to pop up with a notification or just check for it
